I am not entirely sure what made this article catch my attention, yet once I read deeper into the article, I was thoroughly interested as well as frustrated. This article describes the hunt for Eric Frien, who open-fired during a shift change at the police station in Pennsylvania on September 12th. Even after seventeen days, the authorities are still in search for the criminal. The tricky thing is: that although they already have a very good inkling of Frien's is hiding whereabouts, they also have a good one that he is armed and could potentially be a huge danger for the officers. The police even have suspicions that Frien booby-trapped the forest that he is hiding in.
It is obvious that Eric Frien has an extreme hatred towards police officers, for reasons that may never be confirmed. This criminal is a danger to people, as proved in the shooting at the police station. The controversy is how far the officers should or should not go to get this man. If he hates them so much, like he seems to, maybe we should leave him to be alone in the wilderness with his weapons but not give him a reason or chance to use them.

Current Event 9/22
When a person sees the face of Emma Watson, one usually thinks of the familiar girl that has been made famous through the Harry Potter series and more recent films such as Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah, and This Is The End. However, this past week has revealed her courage regarding issues the whole world could be facing. On Saturday, September 20th, 2014, Watson delivered an emotional speech for the United Nations. She addressed a problem most people do not like to speak of or tend to ignore completely; domestic violence.
I am normally turned off by women's activists, mostly because I have accepted the fact that men and women will never be equal, but this movement caught my attention because I have never seen Emma Watson make an uproar of any sort. She always came off as a calm and collective young women who barely has shared an opinion (at least to my knowledge). I know a lot of people, of all ages and genders, that look up to her as an ideal role model because she recently graduated from Brown University in addition to being a versatile and talented actress.
Feminists typically have a bad reputation to anyone who does not identify them as one because they are so extreme and often aggressive about solving their issue. Unlike the stereotypical "feminist", Watson delivers her speech with much pose, while at the same time, making fantastic argumentative points. Quotes such as . “Men — I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too.” and “If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop. For the record, feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.” display themes that persist throughout her address to the UN which is what made it so powerful.

This article describes the incident that took place here in Worcester last week. A bus driver held her students "hostage" and wouldn't open to the doors to allow them to exit. Her reasoning, as she explained later, was that she was following the beginning of school protocol and releasing the kindergarteners before the older kids. Some parents of the upperclassmen were getting agitated so the driver decided to lock the doors and call the police to let them handle it. This made the parents think their children are being held hostage inside the vehicle. The parents were outraged and their kids were trapped inside a hot and sticky bus, a parent even recorded a lengthy video of the whole scenario.
This incident caught my attention because it took place in Worcester and included the Worcester Public Schools. I read a more condensed article and watched the video before I found this report. When doing so, I was unaware of the full situation and had no idea why she was holding the students. Many people were on the same page and concluded the driver was crazy and should be fired. When in reality, she was being the safest as possible for the children. This is a pure example of how the media can be misleading when covering stories.

Chinese city kills 5,000 dogs

This article, found on CNN, describes an outburst of rabies taking place in Hong Long, China. It is thought to have killed five people in addition to nearly five thousand dogs. Well over one hundred this and vaccinations have been provided to stop the rapid spread of the hurtful disease. Officials in China have even been vacinnating stray dogs in order to keep the death toll at a minimum. Rabies is a very contagious virus and can be spread through close contact with animals, typically through a deep cut or stratch. The illness spreads through the body's nervous system and breaks it down often causing a fatality. Rabies is a very serious disease for it can be dangerous as we have seen in Hong Kong this week.
This article strikes my attention because it comes off as the city in China is intentionally killing thousands of these animals. However, this is not the case. A form of rabies has been spreading and had had numerous human casualties as well but many deaths when it comes to animals. The news about the humans surprised me because I have always associated rabies with animals such as dogs and cats, I've very scarcely associated the disease with humans and here it is killing them. The article was very informative and provided the reader with much background knowledge about the incident. It just makes me mad that so many dogs are dying and there is very little china, or anyone/thing for that matter, can do.

I flipped through a lot of Burncoat's old yearbooks and saw some things I liked and some things I would like to do differently for ours. First off, I really like how the top 25 students get a separate section where they can include a different quote and picture. I think it is better when the student can attach their own picture in this area unlike last year's where the yearbook class took separate pictures of each student with a wall as the backdrop. I believe it was in 2009 where they took the class picture in the formation of the year's number in the gymnasium rather than outside on the slant. I think this capture's not only more faces, but also more BHS pride. Obviously it's more costly, but a yearbook with the mostly colored pages appears much more vibrant and professional than one with some black and white pages. I really like how some yearbooks included baby pictures because they're silly and fun; I think we should definitely include that aspect in ours. Some yearbooks had a bunch of advertisements which doesn't look that good, but I am sure it cuts down the cost of each yearbook and allows companies and families to leave personalized messages. Finally, I like how in some yearbooks, a student had their own page to share some of their own high school memories. In some, however, it looks odd because there are only one or two of these. I think we should strongly encourage this and maybe provide smaller and less expensive options to make it more convenient. Looking at these different yearbooks gave me a better understanding of what I like and what I do not like in one.
